St. Joseph’s College of Commerce, formerly a part of St. Joseph’s College, was established in the year 1882 by the French foreign mission Fathers. In 1937, the management of the college was handed over to the Jesuits, an order renowned for their special focus on education. Loyola College, Chennai, St. Xavier’s College, Calcutta and St. Xavier’s College, Mumbai are the other premier institutions in India run by the Jesuit Order.
The Department of Commerce was established in 1949. In 1972, this department became an independent college under the name St. Joseph’s College of Commerce and the institution became autonomous in the year 2004. St. Joseph’s College of Commerce was recognized as a “College with Potential for Excellence” in February 2010 by UGC.
The motto of the College is ‘Fide et Labore’ (‘Faith and Toil’), which serves as an inspiration behind the vision and mission of the college to give shape to a society full of all-inclusive minds to cater to the inherent diversity of our country.
Accredited with ‘A++’ grade by NAAC, the institution is consistent in its proficiency among the top commerce colleges in the country, ranking 63rd under the college category by the National Institute Ranking Framework (NIRF) in 2023.
ComUnity
Formed In The Academic Year 2018-2019
ComUnity is an association for the students of the Department of Commerce to interact and interplay with the real world situations while in college. ComUnity was designed to connect the students of the Department and establish a link between the newly joined members of the Department with the existing members. ComUnity aims to help new students overcome their fears, familiarize them the working of the Department and the College, and also helps them to explore and excel talents, hobbies and skills.
There are events and activities conducted throughout the year that work on improving communication skills, social skills, presentation skills and activities based on basic and modern commercial tasks and functions such as the stock markets. ComUnity builds networks throughout the Department allowing for easier access and efficient functioning of various other associations and classes and therefore, unites the Department of Commerce under one roof.

In the context of today’s globalised economy, it has become increasingly important to develop an interdisciplinary approach to understanding the contemporary business environment and our B.Com course has been streamlined to reflect just that. Its aim is to construct a strong foundational grounding in core subjects such as Accounting, Taxation, Economics, Statistics, Auditing, along with a choice of Cost accounting, Finance, Marketing and Human Resources, studied in the fifth and sixth semester. The course is challenging, yet, rewarding for students with high aspirations. Our students have been sought after by employers for their excellent knowledge, skills and attitude, giving them an edge over their peers from other institutions. The B.Com course of the college is rated amongst the top 10 in the country. (India Today, AC Nielsen Survey 2016).
